After Meta rolled out a new update in April to limit political content by default on Instagram, I quickly drafted an open letter to Instagram to push back against the decision and circulated it amongst some creators for reactions and thoughts. Given the overwhelming frustration and confusion around Meta's update, we saw an opportunity to collectively call out Meta for diminishing the reach of our content and undermining the ability of creators to speak to their own experiences, identities, and livelihoods as well as their advocacy work if it's rendered "political" by Meta. Partnering with GLAAD, Accountable Tech quickly mobilized over 200 creators with a combined audience of nearly 20 million on Instagram to sign on to the open letter to Instagram, receiving press coverage in The Washington Post, Forbes, Tech Crunch, The Independent, and Pivot.
